I recently received this cartoon clipping in the mail:
Of course, this does send a message about the modern understanding of church and Christianity - that God resides inside the four walls of the church and we don't have to worry about having to interact with Him throughout the week.
And I wonder if the looks like the faces of other people are sending a message ? "Wait, we have children who attend here?"...or..."Doesn't he know we don't shout in church?" But, maybe it's just me reading too much into Sunday morning comics...
Where Children's Pastors, Volunteers & Parents unite to help kids become fully committed Disciples of Christ.

Is Relevance Important?
If you run in any ministry leadership circles (which many of you do), you've likely heard the phrase or idea that the church must strive to be relevant to the world / community around it. I wonder just how true that is....
On the one hand it seems to make sense Biblically: "I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings" (1 Cor. 9:22-23). It also makes sense logically: If we cannot relate to those around us, how do we expect to have a voice to speak into their lives?
However, here are some elements we should keep in mind:

However, here are some elements we should keep in mind:
- What's relevant in one community is not relevant in another. Think of ministering in rural Michigan vs. inner city Detroit...
- How easy is it to compromise on elements of the gospel as we seek to be relevant? Granted, a lot of church don't compromise, but many have and continue to do so.
- The gospel - more specifically being the 'good news' to others - is ALWAYS relevant. Let's focus on being the gospel in the flesh rather than figuring out how to make the message fit.
- The idea of relevancy only entrenches the consumerist mentality within the church. That is, "We need to meet the needs of everyone."
I'm sure there are other points to make, but these are just intended to start the conversation...we need to strike a balance between the issues of being relevant, being real, being loving and seeking Christ in every aspect of life.

Church, It's Time to Get Radical
I was prompted to read through the book of Malachi this morning - and boy did I ever need it. This short little minor prophet packs quite the wallop - calling out the people of Israel for their half-hearted, short-sighted, short-handed and lukewarm sacrifices. Just read these passages:
I was blown away how I have been bringing incomplete sacrifices to Him! I have been offering him only partial offerings. He demands - he deserves - our ALL! I especially like that last verse: "Test me in this,' says the LORD Almighty, 'and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it'." You see, when we serve God - we are not the ones giving! We are receiving!! Here's an illustration: What if your pastor asked you to serve by coming to wash his car twice a week? You may say, "Well, OK: you're the pastor." But then he says, "Oh yeah, I'll pay you $1000 a week to do it!" Would you do it? You bet your sweet little hiney you would!!
You see, God is the giver! We are not the giver! God gives us blessings and rewards. I don't know about you, but I want that!! You can take all of these things I posses and simply give me Jesus - they belong to Him anyway. Church - it's time to get radical! Are you willing to give Him everything and see what he will do?
"When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?” says the LORD Almighty. (1:8)
"Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you,” says the LORD Almighty, “and I will accept no offering from your hands. (1:10)He even is talking about the priests:
Because of you I will rebuke your descendants; I will smear on your faces the dung from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it. (3:3)
"But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,” says the LORD Almighty. (2:8)He even takes on the topic of money:
"In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. (3:8-10)

A repost: Because of March Madness
I wrote this blog entry four years ago (wow, I'm getting old), but thought I would repost it because of the start of the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. Also, because I am a HUGE Ohio State fan!!
______________________________________
I realize I may be going out on a limb talking about basketball (given that most of you who volunteer in CM are probably don't care much about sports), but this is worth reading. We are coming into Championship weekend of the NCAA Tournament for 2007 and, in case you did not realize it, my Ohio State Buckeyes are still in it. (By the way....where is Michigan this year?) :) The real reason I am posting about this is not necessarily about baskeball...read this:
When UCLA’s legendary basketball coach John Wooden introduced the fast break to college basketball, his team committed the highest number of turnovers and fouls in memory. But Wooden knew “mistakes were part of learning.” He expected them, and he knew that “every opportunity for failure was equally an opportunity for success.” Wooden’s teams went on to perfect the fast-break offense, and today it is used by nearly every team in the nation. His teams went on to win ten national collegiate championships in twelve years, one of the most remarkable team achievements in all of sports history. ( If It Ain’t Broke, Break It! pgs. 193-194.)

There is much that God can do through you as you allow Him to show you what could happen. I am convinced God has great things in store for you and the Children's Ministry of "The Woods" if we will release it to Him. Mistakes may be made along the way, but God will be in control.
So...do you have any thoughts or insights. I want you guys to be comfortable commenting on here. Remember you can do it anonymously, so do not fear!

An Open Apology
Over the last few weeks the Lord has continued to reveal things in my life that are not honoring or glorifying Him. Some of these has been family related, but some of this has been ministry related. I balance many roles in my life: Husband, father, Children's Ministry Pastor, leader, follower, servant, and so on... There are certain areas that I am better at than others and the Lord is bringing me along in the areas in which I fall short.
This may came as no shock to you, but at times my personality can come on pretty strong. There are times when I want people to value the same things I value; to believe the same things I believe; to think the same way I think. Of course, I think we all have similar thoughts within us - namely when it comes to our kids - and we do a lot of things to strive to make that happen. But....
I owe you an apology! Because no matter how we qualify our actions, there are times where we have acted unjustly and sinfully. I'm intentionally leaving this vague as details are not the issue. The issue is the heart, a love of God's people, and my desire to live out God's Word in Romans 12:18: "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." So, for what it's worth...I have offended some of you - I was wrong - and I am sorry.
His, Dean
PS - Feel free to leave a comment if you've ever been in a position where you needed to apologize. I'm sure we've all been there.

Is Serving Optional?
If you've followed this blog or the Anchor Children's Ministry Facebook page for very long, then you know how often I put messages out there about needed volunteer and service opportunities. In fact, you may say to yourself, "Man, he sure is needy!" LOL. But, on top of trying to fill open service positions within Children's Ministry, there is a much bigger picture at stake here: Our on-going relationship with Christ!
As Christians we are called to model our lives after Jesus - He is to be our Ultimate Example (among other things) in life! He is the one we are supposed to pattern our lives after! So, the question becomes "Why did Jesus come to earth in the first place?" (You know where I'm going with this.....)
You remember the argument that James and John - and their mother - had with Jesus about who was going to sit at the right and left hands of God??? The Sons of Zebedee wanted to know how to be great! Jesus' answer would I'm sure have been rather shocking: If you want to be great, you must become a slave / servant to each other!
"Huh!?!?!? Jesus came to serve? But, he's the Son of God - the One who created the world. He shouldn't be serving anyone, but should be served by us!" As followers of Christ, if we truly desire to be committed to Him, WE MUST SERVE!!!!! There is no way around it. In fact, the Bible is riddled with verses and themes about serving others.
Fellow Believers - Serving is NOT optional! If you simply come to church every week, maybe give a little money, then go home - you are NOT following Christ. You may be a Christian - but you are not a Christ Follower! We are CALLED to serve!
Are you willing to step up to the plate? Do you want to make a difference in the lives of your kids? Service opportunities abound - will you answer the call?!?

A Better Way
OK, so I've gotta get something off my chest - so allow me to vent for a brief moment!
What's up with the "in a relationship" statuses on Facebook? I see tons (and I do mean tons) of young people's "relationship status" changing almost daily! Going from single, to "in a relationship," to "it's complicated" all in a week's time! Young people, take it from someone who's been there (albeit a loooong time ago): THERE IS A BETTER WAY."
I realize that as God-created humans we have a need to be relationships - even ones with those of the opposite sex. But I think we've gotten this whole relationship & dating thing all messed up! Teens: God doesn't want you to waste sooo much time on some random boy or girl, trying to "define" the relationship, then letting everyone know about it (through Facebook or otherwise).....He wants you to focus on the things that matter: Loving Him, THEN loving others! There is so much you have yet to experience, memories to be made - but you are so focused on the present you cannot see it, yet!
Parents: help your teenage sons and daughters understand that being "in a relationship" is not the epitome of the teenage existence!!! There is much that God has in store for your child/children - encourage them to spend time on that! Help them understand that all that relationship "stuff" will work itself out as we follow Him. Dads, let your daughters know they don't need to seek the approval from anyone other than you and their Heavenly Father. Moms, let your sons know you love them unconditionally no matter what!
When I was in high school and even college, I spent an incredible amount of time trying to figure out who I could "go out" with or who would be my girlfriend. It was a waste of time!!! Instead, 5 months after finally deciding I would "Kiss Dating Goodbye" I met the love of my life. She will even tell you that the first thing out of my mouth after meeting her was "Hi, my name is Dean and I'm NOT interested in a relationship." That turned out to be a challenge for her - and she won!!!!
OK, I'm done with that rant! Thanks for listening!

To what are we called to be?
If I believe there is a God, and if I believe that God has His hand in creating and running things on this planet, but what would His desire be for my life? For what purpose do I exist? Well, we may have not got that answer figured out completely yet, but I would venture to say there a place we can go to help us.....
We hear a lot of talk today about "Being Culturally Relevant" - a phrase common in modern & emergent churches. It's another way of saying we are to be "in the world, but not of the world." But did you know that phrase is not anywhere in the Bible? It's not.....search for it! Furthermore, the Greek word is cosmos, and is most often referred to the place where Satan reigns. We are to be physically present in this cosmos, but not follow its values.
- "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light..." - 1 Peter 2:9
- Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. - Romans 12:2
- Since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” - 1 Peter 1:16
- We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. - Romans 6:6
There are lots of versus in God's Word that point to how we are supposed to be "different." Different than the world around us. Different than those who don't have the Spirit living within them. Different than those we run into every day. But if you look around, can you tell if someone is a Christ-follower?

We are to be physically present in this cosmos, but not follow its values. So I'll ask a different question: Are we called to be 'relevant' or to be 'set-apart?' Because I don't think we can be both! I believe that we are to "be Holy as God is Holy." And, as we are growing Holy, that gives us the opportunity to be light in the darkness and to be "inf the world, but not of it."

Blessing of Your Home
Mark Holmen visited our church last week and conducted a Parenting Workshop. One of the things he talked about was conducting a Home Blessing. I went online and did a little research and found a few helpful resources. The one I like the best is this one:

Noticer - The Movement
I ran across an author today after he "followed" me on Twitter - his name is Andy Andrews. Andy is an author and speaker who has begun quietly influencing some of the most well-known people in the world. His most recent work - The Noticer - is a allegoric, fictional work written from his own story. While homeless and living in garages and under a pier in Southern Alabama...
First, what a great idea!!! To ponder and then contact the 5 most positively influential people in your life to let them know how they have influenced your life! That could be very powerful in one's life!! I wonder who mine are and would be?? Who have I influenced - would I be part of someone's 5??? How was I influenced by my family???
As a Christ-Follower, as I watched that video, I couldn't help but think "Who was / is Jones?" Was he a real human.....an angel.....a demon????? (Yes, they REALLY do exist!) At first glance, you may think, "Well, it MUST HAVE been an angel! How else could this guy have gone from homeless to influencing major famous people!" But, allow me a little latitude.....
One thing I didn't hear on the video or read on the websites is anything about Jesus or even God. I actually began to get a little bit of a sinking feeling the more I watched and read. I may be WAY off base, but is The Noticer influencing people towards the Trinitarian, Loving, REAL God? Or to somewhere, someone else? Could this just be a distraction from pointing people to a loving, all-encompassing relationship with the Creator and His Son, Jesus Christ?
Jesus spoke clearly on this, " He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters" (Matt 12:30). Also, every angel we read about in God's Word gives all glory to God and points us back to Him. Did The Noticer do that?
As Believers, we MUST be discerning of what we allow to influence us. There are lots of things out there that want to take us and our families down paths AWAY from the most important Thing. I wonder if this movement is indeed a GOOD thing for Believers. I think it CAN be, but.....
"...a mysterious old man named Jones has a miraculous way of showing up. A man of indiscriminate age and race with white hair and wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt and carrying a battered old suitcase, Jones is a unique soul with near angelic qualities. Communicating what he calls “a little perspective,” Jones explains that he has been given a gift of noticing things about life that others miss. In his simple interactions, Jones speaks to that part in everyone that is yearning to understand why things happen and what they can do about it."I haven't yet read the book - I just found out about it - but watching this video intrigued me.

Family + Church = Collaborate / The Book Review
The latest book to hit the virtual shelves of Amazon and other websites in the genre of Family Ministry is called Collaborate! This book is a compilation of 35 different authors that focus on different aspects of the intentional partnership between the church and the home. I was given the opportunity to receive an advance copy (for the purposes of reviewing it on this Web-Log) from Ministers Label and Michael Chanley - the collaborator of Collaborate!
This type of book is, from what I know, a one-of-a-kind approach within the field of Family Ministry. It was enjoyable to hear the different stories of how certain ministries and programs came into existence. For instance, Carey Nieuwhof's chapter on his journey into understanding the centrality of the family for evangelism and discipleship was excellent! Maybe it's just because I feel a slight connection with Carey (he lives in Canada and I live near Canada - goofy I know) - even though I'll likely never meet him - I enjoyed hearing his story.
Another chapter filled with Story is Fred Stoeker's chapter called "Doing Book." Fred, one the authors of the "Every Man's Battle" series, put his heart into explaining how he was able to have difficult, yet meaningful conversations with his pre-teens and teens. You should check it out!
Basically, I liked just about every chapter that put the family BEFORE the programs and ministries of the church:

Basically, I liked just about every chapter that put the family BEFORE the programs and ministries of the church:
- "The Missing Piece - Developing a Biblical Worldview in your Children" by Jim Wideman
- "Paramount Parenting" by Matt Markins
- "The Small Conquering the Big" by Steven Dilla (again one with a dramatic personal story)
- "Living the Shema as a Dad" by Timothy Smith
My favorite chapter, by far, was Dr. Rob Rienow's entitled "Building a Theology of Family Ministry." Rob does simply an amazing job at laying a whole-Biblical approach to the importance of Family Ministry - far beyond the standard Deuteronomy 6 and Psalm 78 passages. His linking of the First Commandment (Genesis 1:28) and the overarching Meta-Narrative of the Covenant of God, the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:34-36), and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) is exactly what every church needs to read / hear to see just how central the family is to the Covenant Plan of God. I love this quote:
"If we are passionate about seeing the advance of the Gospel of the Kingdom of Christ, let us begin by turning our hearts toward home. Let us ask God to help us begin our ministry in this world by 'making disciples' of our family members, even if they are scattered around the country - our parents siblings, spouses and children. Let us passionately and biblically defend God's plan, structure and purposed for the institution of the family, as well as the institution of the church."
If we accept on any level what Dr. Reinow lays out, then that calls for a serious evaluation of how we do ministry! Is the Church missing the mark? Has the modern church moved too far away from the plan of using the family to be the first and central place of discipleship and evangelism? If that's the case, then it is a move that is AT BEST, ineffective or AT WORST, un-Biblical! To that end, there were some frustrations with some of the chapters within Collaborate.
One such chapter for me was Justyn Smith's chapter on "PJ's All Stars Leadership Team." This chapter about PJ's (Pastor Justyn's) seems like a great way to develop kid leaders - even including components for the kids to do at home. But underneath this program is the idea that what happens at church is more important than what happens at home. It puts the onus of raising discipleship squarely on the church - PJ specifically - and not onto the parents. There are others that do a little of this as well:
- "Selling Out - Sold Out" by Rob Bradbury
- "Family Nourishment" by Joyce Oglesby
- "Parent Liaisons" by Anna J. Light
- Even the logo on the front of the book puts the "church" about twice as big as the "home"
The problem is not that our churches DO NOT or CANNOT do discipleship with kids effectively, nor do I believe that we should stop all Children's Ministry programming ('cause then I would be out of a job!☺). But, are our ways of doing ministry with kids, youth and adults minimizing or even violating scripture by taking the responsibility away from parents. Common objections would be: "Well, parents aren't doing it effectively" or "This is how we choose to partner with the home." Well, if that's the issue, what about if the families in our churches are not tithing or giving financially? Do we begin to give FOR them? Or do you teach and instruct them on the importance and commandment to give financially back to God?
I realize this may make me unpopular with many Children and Youth workers, so feel free to disagree. In fact, I encourage it as I believe we are all still works in progress - ME INCLUDED!!! I too am trying to work this stuff through and bring honor to God in my family and service in ministry. Thanks Mr. Chanley for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this though-provoking book!

How is the Family Different? - A Facebook Comment Transplant
A Co-Worker recently asked a great question on Facebook that I think has implications for how we do Kid's & Family Ministry, so I thought I would share it here:
In what ways has the concept of "the family" changed from Biblical times until now? In what ways do conservative Christians view "the family" similarly and differently than they did in the New Testament era? In what ways are these changes good and in what ways are they not so good? There were several responses, but here are my initial thoughts:
The definition and make up of family has changed drastically over the centuries - and it is hard to put labels on those, but here are a few:
1) Extended Family vs. Nuclear Family - in NT extended families living in the same abode (or on the same compound) was common place. Aunts, Uncles, G-parents, cousins grew up and often stayed in the same area their whole life. Nowadays, in CC circles, extended families are the exception and not the norm. Of course, nuclear families in the "traditional sense" (mom, dad, kids in one house) is quickly becoming the exception as well. This is not a statement of good or bad, just one of observation - but one that does carry implications for ministry
2) Transience - families today are far more mobile than they were in the OT. Simply b/c of the inability to cover vast areas of land easily and quickly, families in OT and NT times most often just stayed together. Today, children are often living in different states and different countries than where they grew up and where their parents may be.
3) Individual vs. Corporate - Families are far more isolative today than in Biblical times. When we lived in Colorado , the neighborhood I lived in looked like cattle stockyards b/c everyone had a 6 ft privacy fence keep their own piece of land separated from everyone else's. Also, with the invention of the garage and garage door opener, families never even have to come in contact with others if they choose to. They simply press a button to open and close their home without ever being seen.
4) Family size - Families today are far smaller than in Biblical times as well. I couldn't venture a guess what family size was back then, but I would imagine it is far more than the 1.8 kids per families today. On the surface this doesn't seem like a big deal, but when you understand the reasons behind having numerous children back in OT & NT times, it becomes a bigger issue: kids for working the family business/farm, kids to carry on the beliefs and values of the Spiritual family are just 2 of them.
5) Priorities & Values - Overall the values and priorities of the family has changed drastically. It seems one of the main thrusts of the family in the OT & NT was to promote certain values or at the least maintain certain priorities - maintaining a certain level of livelihood was one of them (i.e., you grew crops and raised cattle to make a living and to be able to eat vs. going to the grocery store and buying whatever is needed).
The priorities and values of our families today show a very different culture. With the rise of entertainment - music, sports, computer technology, etc. - families have shifted into focusing on things that they believe will benefit their kids more in the long run. Not that these things are BAD in and of themselves, but I often wonder what is being left out to make room for all of these things?
6) Outsourcing – We have become a nation that outsources just about everything. We get our kids lessons for sports, music lessons, tutoring, spiritual training, etc. We buy our groceries at a store rather than grow them ourselves. We use technology to outsource our entertainment so kids don’t have to entertain themselves. In part, this has been driven by necessity – working 40-70 hours a week doesn’t leave a lot of time for other things. But there are also choices the family has made to value certain things over others; so to make time for those things we see how we can cut time to “make room” for it all.
7) Maturity & Rite of Passage - By and large, in European and American cultures, the age of maturity and marriageability has risen since OT & NT times. We tend to think of young people not being adults until they reach 18-21 years of age; and even then they not really ready to be married until much later in their twenties. This wasn't the case for a LOOOOONG time! A Rite of Passage typically took place (Bar Mitzvahs, Bat Mitzvahs in Jewish culture) took place at age 13-16 - and it is then they were marriage eligible. You still see this in various cultures around the world - Quinceanera, for example - but by and large has gone by the wayside.

That’s all I got to say about that…..

Superman vs. Jesus
During my devotional time today - which is all too few and far between - I was reading about how Jesus was FULLY human. It directed me to read Isaiah 52:13 - 53:12 - likely one of the most famous Messianic passages from the Old Testament. There are some interesting thoughts around this question: What was life like for Jesus as he was growing up?
I then got to thinking, what life would have been like for Jesus growing up? Did these things take place as a kid, teenager, adult???? Here's an analogy...
Remember the original Superman Movie??? You know, the one with Christopher Reeves???? [Yes, I'm THAT old!] As Clark Kent, Superman was just an ordinary kid who was made fun of and put down. He didn't play any sports or show himself to have any special talent. But underneath that, he was The Man of Steel! He could do just about anything - including FLY!!!!!!
I wonder if Jesus was picked on and made fun of as a teen??? Did he keep his Lordship under raps??? Underneath the exterior of the Son of Man, was the King of Kings! One who would save the world!!!
I guess what I'm getting at is that no matter what you've been through, God has been through worse! No matter what you've done, God has been there! Remember that as you go through your day!
"He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not."There are times when I may not have been popular, and certainly experienced suffering in my lifetime; but I don't think I can ever say I've been "despised!" But our Savior was!
"Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards."I have certainly been mocked before - both in my childhood and adult life - but I can't say I've ever been a "song of the drunkard!?" But our Savior was!
I then got to thinking, what life would have been like for Jesus growing up? Did these things take place as a kid, teenager, adult???? Here's an analogy...

Hot off the Presses - The Journey
As Family Journey in Faith has grown over the last 3 years at Colonial Woods, a desire to encourage, inspire and equip as many parents as possible has risen. This desire does not just include families of pre-school and Elementary kids, but those with pre-teens and teenagers as well. To that end, it is my joy to begin to offer a resource for parents of ALL aged kids who wish to continue to mentor and disciple their children in the home.
"The Journey" is a quarterly (for now) newsletter available for download that provides insights, encouragement, and resources for parents as we seek to carry out the Great Commission in our families. I know what you may be thinking: "Oh great! One more thing to read to fill up "all this time" I have on my hands!?!?!?" (Sarcasm intended.) The FJIF team understands you are busy! We understand there are thousands of messages speaking into your marriage and family every day! You don't necessarily need one more thing to do....
But the FJIF team also understands that God has placed each parent into the primary role to teach their kids about God. We are the ones they will learn about any and all spiritual matters from; and as Jesus followers I very much want my kids to follow Him as well. Take a look through "The Journey" and let God encourage you through it.
Also, let us know your thoughts and insights for future editions. There is also a Giveaway Contest if you would like to participate.

Dean

The Race is On for our Kids
I ran across this recording from a website - Visionary Parenting - and needed to share with all of you. Dr. Rob Rienow is the Family Pastor at Wheaton Bible Church in Wheaton, IL. It's a little long, but you could listen to it while checking out Facebook, your email or other work.
Here is the description from Dr. Rienow's website:
How effective is your Children's Ministry at supporting parents and helping children discover and grow in Christ? This message from Rob Rienow was given to the 200 Children's Ministry leaders/volunteers at Wheaton Bible Church. Please consider sharing this message with the Children's team at your church. Listen by clicking below, or download via the podcast link. After listening to the message, view the powerpoint (warning: VERY graphic) that Rob refers to HERE!
Our kids are being sought after HIGHLY by Satan - will we win the fight for the next generation? Are we being the parents God wants us to be in carrying out our MAIN purpose in our families?

The Changing Face of Children's Ministry
There is a new wave happening in the church today! A move allowing Children's Ministry to be put on display for the larger Church to see. The reason for this is because we are beginning to see just how important it is to influence others when they are young - under 13 especially! It's a move that allows and requires us to keep the parents informed on how to pass on a legacy of love to their children and how the Church can SUPPORT that. So, of course, with that limelight comes some responsibility - but more important an opportunity!
An opportunity to put our best foot forward. An opportunity to allow parents, church goers and non-church goers just what can be accomplished in Children's Ministry when the church and parents work together. And an opportunity to show just what kind of quality and effective programming can be put forth. This brings me to my main point.
I recently received a brochure from a large Children's Ministry para-church group in the mail recently. It was nicely done - glossy and in full color, laid out well, a good balance between information and vision capturing. But, there was a one glaring issue for me: It looked "old!"

- The pictures of the two main people for the organization were ladies in at least their 50's. There is a difference than BEING 50 and LOOKING 50!
- The names listed as board members were all likely older folks; and though I am sure they are all quite distinguished and respected, only 1 name I recognized.
- The font choice was boring.
- The other pics used were ones someone had simply taken with their personal camera and not professional looking.
There is, however, a New Face of Children's Ministry. One that includes
- High capacity leaders;
- Young people excited, passionate and gifted for CM;
- Uses video to enhance their vision;
- Works hard at making things look inviting
- Understands that CM can be cutting edge, but it takes work.
Let me show you what I mean....
Here is a site that I would say has "The New Face" of Children's Ministry. Jonathan, an up and coming young Children's Ministry Leader, does all of those things listed above; including a great video explanation to parents the importance of Salvation and Baptism. Also, a couple of great brochures on Salvation and Baptism for parents to work through with their kids.
On the other side, here is a Children's Ministry brochure (Not the same one I received in the mail) that shows a good quality, but not all that inviting. On the surface there is nothing wrong with it, but it tells a lot about they style and "face" of their ministry - Old School.
Now granted, at times my brochures, postcards, posters, etc. I have made up in the church are often not that great (something I am working on), but then again I'm not on a national stage either. One way to help with this is to find someone with a creative edge and "an eye" for good design. For instance, this summer one of our interns did this poster for VBS:
To compare here is one I did (Just hurts to look at it!):
Which would you rather be involved in???
Food for thought!

Google Search: Why Did I Get Married

If you've come to this site from Google, read below!!!!!!!!! Oh year, everyone else too.
OK, so you see that little Site Meter Stats box down a little bit on the right? That is a little way I can track how many people have visited Anchor CM's blog. It also tells me:
- Where they live - Port Huron, Toledo, etc.
- What Internet service provider they are using - Comcast, Verizon, etc.
- What pages or blog entries they visited
- what web browser - Internet Explorer, FireFox, etc., and
- How they came across my website - Linked from another blog, etc.
So get this: the overwhelming reason people visit my site has NOTHING to do with Children's Ministry or Colonial Woods (the church I work in)!!! I get at least 5 visits per day people referred from the Google search: why did I get married. A while back I had a couple of posts talking about those popular films by Tyler Perry using them as a springboard to encourage us to be more vulnerable with our spouse.
Now, I find that interesting because I wonder why people are searching for the answer to that question. Is it because they are looking for information on the movie? Or are they searching for answers to that question for THEMSELVES??? Given our current culture and the rate of divorce in our nation, it wouldn't surprise me that people might just be turning to the Internet to give me a 1 good reason why they should stay married.
Perhaps I am reading more into this that what is necessary, but what if people do happen to stop by this site on their search for answers? What should we tell them? What would you tell them? If I had to give the one answer as to why they should stay married, it is for the reason that you got married to begin with!!!!!!!!!!
You're asking the right question - why did U get married - because the reason you got married should be the SAME reason you STAY married. What is that reason? Depends.....
- Because I couldn't imagine spending my life without her.
- Because I came alive when I met her (had to borrow that one, but it's TRUE).
- Because there is no one on earth like her.
- Because my Love for her is only bettered by God's Love for me.
What would you say to that person if you knew someone was reading this blog and asking "Why am I married?"

President's Speech - So Any thoughts?
Whether you watched "The Speech" here or somewhere else (or not at all), do you have any thoughts on what the President said? Basically, it seems to have come and gone much like any other thing politicians seem to say.
The President seemed to focus on the broad topic of Personal Responsibility - a topic also well covered in the Bible. Nothing earth shattering or that upsetting in the speech....except I do have one thought.
As believers, we are called to have Christ at the VERY CENTER of our lives. Seemingly everything we do and say should be done with keeping Him there. So, the millions of lost people that saw this video today: Did it help them come any closer to a relationship with their Creator? Did it help the thousands (likely more) Christian kids in public schools grow any deeper in their walk with Christ? See I don't have an issue with the President speaking to the kids in our schools...I think with parental notification and coaching they SHOULD watch the video. What I struggle with is whether or not this helps our kids and families to KNOW God more? (Even if I do not favor his opinoins and policies, his story is one many public school kids can relate to!)
I think it can if the parents step into that process. Human behavior defaults to the sinful and negative side of things. We must be intentional in teaching our kids to see God and take on Biblical values. If we leave things up to "nature," our kids will not come to it on their own. And if we believe that God's Word is sufficient for ALL OF LIFE, then a speech by some guy in a powerful office won't even phase them - one way or another.
But just don't leave it hanging there either. Take this and ANY opportunity to teach your kids about God and His Word to us.

Potential Conflicts Ahead

On September 8th President Barack Obama is going to be speaking via Satellite and TV to all the kids who attend Public schools (and possibly some private ones will show them as well). Teachers are being encouraged to make this an assignment for their kids including some pre and post work According to this website the President plans on talking about the importance of education and succeeding in school.
I bring it to your attention because unlike any president before this, it seems everyone has a rather strong opinion, one way or another, about President Obama. It seems you either like him...or you don't. As parents, our younger kids will most likely pick up on our beliefs and opinions and convey those as their own. It would not surprise me in the least to hear of classrooms becoming a place for arguing and conflict over the person of the President as there will undoubtedly be differing opinions on his politics.
Parents, if your child's school is going to be showing this speech, perhaps this would be a good opportunity for you to do some pre-work of your own with your kids.
- Help them to understand how to know what they believe and stand up for it.
- Teach them to test those beliefs against the Word of God and see if they hold up.
- Coach them on how to be respectful and loving yet hold onto the Truth.
- Finally, teach them to pray and ask for God's strength and wisdom is facing any conflict that may come up.
Again, as parents we need to be involved in the education of our kids. Education is not just about learning how to read and write, but it is about defining a set of values and beliefs as to how we should interact with the world. Also known as "A Worldview." Be sure to keep this in mind as we launch into another school year.
